O comportamento recente do investimento direto brasileiro no exterior em perspectiva
Daniela Corrêa e Gilberto Tadeu Lima
The recent behavior of the Brazilian direct investment abroad in perspective. This paper analyzes the recent behavior of the Brazilian direct investment abroad, as captured by an annual census conducted by the Central Bank of Brazil since 2001, by putting it in a broader perspective that includes international official data sources and early sample studies. Though the Central Bank has not been making available more disaggregated data than those analyzed here, it is intended to contribute to a better grasping of the perspectives of competitive internationalization of local firms, which is desirable not only as far as the external accounts are concerned, but also from the viewpoint of the technological capabilities of the local firms.

Economic growth stimulated by natural resources: a note on the Botswana experience. Botswana was the fastest growing economy in the world in the 1966-1989 period. Even though the discovery and exploitation of large diamond reserves had played an essential role in such an impressive performance, favorable economic, political and institutional conditions allowed the use of the resulting large export revenues as a lever for economic growth, though not for development.

This paper aims at discussing critically Persio Arida’s proposal of adopting currency convertibility in Brazil. Arida (2003a, 2003b, 2004) points out that currency convertibility would make for lower domestic interest rates in Brazil, as well as for lower interest rates for the Brazilian external bonds. Besides, currency convertibility would stabilize capital flows, as well as exchange rate volatility in Brazil. We argue in this paper that this proposal does not lead necessarily either to less exchange rate volatility, or to lower interest rates. Besides, we close the paper by presenting some alternatives in terms of capital controls in Brazil.

Knowledge in the wonderland of the market of ideas: deconstructing the economics os science of Michael Polanyi
Gilberto Tadeu Lima

The irreductibility of macro to microeconomics: a methodological approach
Luiz Carlos Bresser-Pereira e Gilberto Tadeu Lima

Maria Rita Loureiro e Gilberto Tadeu Lima
This article analyzes the influence exercised by the so-called “American model” on the setting up of the institutional framework which allowed the consolidation of scientific competence in Economics in Brazil. It shows the principal mechanisms through which the patterns established in the developed countries, in the USA in particular, were incorporated into the studies of Economics in Brazil; and also the resistance met by the process of internationalization or Americanization in some areas of the university environment in the country. The data and tables organized offer a quantitative dimension of this process.

Mario Augusto Bertella e Gilberto Tadeu Lima
It is developed a macrodynamic model in the post-keynesian tradition of political economy of the productive capital accumulation and income distribution to analyze some of the impacts of the (flow of) foreign direct investment and the (stock of) foreign productive capital on capital accumulation, economic growth and functional income distribution in a stylized economy. Alongside a usual demand effect, the impacts of such an internationalization of local capital through labor productivity and market concentration are taken into account as well.
